We love putting on that rose-tinted mineral blush, brown eyeliner, and the perfect shade of nude lipstick before leaving to work or party. Why wouldn’t we? Makeup is fun to play with and transformative to boot. However, many of us, more often than not, skip the most important step of a makeup routine – removing it! The benefits of makeup removal are so important that experts suggest using a makeup remover as part of your skincare ritual even if you don’t use cosmetics!
Why not just use a face wash?
Make-up is typically not created water-soluble; if it was, we would have it bleeding on our faces within a few hours of application. Most makeup is made to resist sweat, therefore a simple scrub n’ wash will not dissolve all of it away.
Secondly, dirt, oil, and makeup sit in the pores and fine lines of our faces which a face wash can simply not access. Over time, the unwashed build-up almost certainly leads to skin problems, such as clogged pores, blackheads, a dull-looking complexion, and the worst of all – breakouts!
Makeup removal products are crème based so they can dissolve sebum and cosmetic remnants easily. The process of removal itself, which involves rubbing in the remover thoroughly and wiping with damp cotton or cloth, helps eliminate dead skin cells and prompt cellular renewal. Not only that, it stimulates microcirculation due to the massage action.
When to do it?
Ideally, you should use a makeup remover twice a day – once before going to bed and again you wake up. Use a quality remover that is allergy-safe and made with beneficial ingredients like green tea or chamomile.
But why twice? Using it after waking up, rids the skin of perspiration and sebum accumulated overnight. While incorporating it in your nighttime routine helps eliminate cosmetic residue and impurities.
